Institut Mittag-Leffler (IML) is the oldest mathematics research institute in the world. It was founded in 1916 and has operated in its current form since 1969.
It is one of the most well-known research centers in the world, a model for others and renowned for its research programs and its world leading journal Acta Mathematica. The institute organizes two semester-long research programs and eight to ten week-long summer conferences per year. It attracts world leading researchers and research in all the major areas of mathematics.
IML is a vital resource for Swedish mathematicians, a place where their research can be developed in collaboration with internationally leading researchers from top universities all over the world and essentially all Swedish mathematicians have made research visits to the institute.
Further, it strengthens mathematics in Sweden, for example IML was the first point of contact with Sweden for several of the internationally recruited mathematicians now working in the country.
IML is the only institute of its kind within the Nordic countries, and it receives support from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Iceland.
Internationally, the institute cooperates and competes with other top-level institutes such as IAS Princeton, the Newton Institute at Cambridge, MFO Oberwolfach, Institute Henri Poincaré, Paris, and MSRI, Berkeley, and the importance for Swedish mathematics of having one of the best research institutes in the world can hardly be exaggerated.
