Socially sustainable housing for older adults: a scoping review and stakeholder consultation to inform evidence-based recommendations

Housing supply and the ageing population are issues that pose challenges for social, health, and economic policies.

There is a shortage of suitable, affordable, secure housing in several countries that promote social inclusion for inhabitants, especially for older adults.

The aim of this project is to provide an overview of the existing literature on design features that support socially sustainable living environments for older adults. We will use a systematic scoping methodology to identify and summarize the findings. In addition, the results will be consulted with international, interdisciplinary stakeholders.

The stakeholders have expertise in housing, building planning, architecture, social and health service.

Also, older adults will be recruited through a previously established international project team with principal investigators in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Canada.

The consultations will provide content expertise to the literature findings and an opportunity to build evidence-based solutions that promote socially sustainable living environments for older persons.

The findings from this project will be disseminated through many different initiatives, including publishing in peer-reviewed journals and trade journals, web seminars and policy documents to support the development of the social housing policy in Sweden.
