Purpose and goal:
Digital platforms are often characterized as enablers of new ecosystems, where network effects give rise to winner-take-all markets (e.g., Apple and Uber). This project will focus on a related but different phenomenon, namely that of introducing new digital platforms in the existing healthcare ecosystem. The purpose of this project is to explore the introduction of digital platforms in the established Swedish healthcare ecosystem, and its impact on cooperation, competition, and complementarities in healthcare, and the daunting challenges in terms of ecosystem governance.
Expected results and effects:
The purpose of this research project is to explore the introduction of digital platforms in established healthcare ecosystems and its impact on cooperation, competition, and complementarities in healthcare, and the daunting challenges in terms of ecosystem governance. This will provide implications and recommendations to researchers, policymakers and business leaders.
Approach and implementation:
We will use an embedded case study approach to examine the development and dynamics of an established healthcare ecosystem where digital platforms are introduced. We will use the case of digital primary care in Sweden, as it provides an ideal setting to investigate the impact of digital platforms on the healthcare
ecosystem. The data for the proposed project will draw on both primary and secondary data sources.
