Drained peatlands account for 25% of Sweden´s total climate impact. Rewetting of previously drained forest land is therefore necessary for the fulfilling of Paris Agreement objectives.
The loss of habitat for endangered species associated with moist and wet forests is another difficult challenge that we are facing.
In this study, we want to use interdisciplinary methods to examine the possibilities for integrating biological diversity as an additional goal for rewetting measures. The first part of the project is a synthesis study.
Here we want to compile previously conducted research on restoration of moist and wet forested land, focusing on implications for biodiversity and climate. The second part is an empirical study.
The objective is to define the target forests for optimum biodiversity and climate benefits in future rewetting projects.
We want to do this by examining wetland forest habitats for unique compositions of vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens and by assessing their carbon balance. The third part is about rewetting, climate and biodiversity from a societal perspective.
By interviewing forest owners that have participated in rewetting projects led by the Swedish Forest Agency, we want to examine forest owners´ views and motivations for participating in rewetting projects. Our studies will lead to new knowledge about moist and wet forest functions for improving climate and ecosystem.
The results will be useful in future planning of forest wetland restoration.
