Sex-sorting of eggs, important steps towards commersialization

Purpose and goal:

The goal of the project was to develop an algorithm to sex-sort newly laid eggs that will become laying hens. Only eggs that will become hens are hatched and the eggs that would become roosters can be used as food, as there is no embryo. The VINNOVA project has contributed very important knowledge to the algorithm for DANSiC´s method of sex-sorting eggs.

Expected results and effects:

We expect to have shown proof of concept within about six months. This means that we have developed a sufficiently stable algorithm for the sex sorting of eggs, and that we can begin the process of commercializing our method, which will take another 2-years. Approach and implementation:

The increased knowledge contributed by this project, as well as a measuring equipment that automatically measures 20 eggs, we expect will generate the long-term stable algorithm for sexing eggs. Then, together with a large hatchery in Sweden, we will start commercializing DANSiC´s method.
