Grant Description

The wood product sector aims at replacing fossil-based adhesives with sustainable bio-based alternatives, but so far their industrial implementation is limited. A key challenge is proper evaluation of the mechanical performance of new wood adhesive systems. The standardised lap-shear strength test (EN 302-1) used today provides poor indication of performance.

Introduction of fracture mechanics to adhesive bonds has played an important role in fast advancing fields such as the automobile, aerospace and windmill industry by introducing new standardised test methods, design criteria and predictive tools.

However, this approach is not used in the wood product industry today for evaluation of the mechanical performance of new wood-adhesive systems.

This project therefore aims to establish a framework for the wood product industry for proper evaluation of the mechanical performance of bio-based wood adhesives systems and related wood-based products.

The project adopts a fracture mechanics approach that allows for implementation of accurate predictive tools through a combination of numerical modelling and experimental methods.

The framework will be build, tested and evaluated together with stakeholders, while considering the practicality of using the methodology in an industrial environment, to ensure fitness-for-purpose.

This will aid in further development and successful implementation of bio-based wood adhesives systems in the wood product industry.
