Investigation of the standardisation needs in relation to the climate transformation of the steel industry

Purpose and goal:

Aims: Spread knowledge on methods for steel´s climate impact. Contribute to standardization and harmonization within production and use of steel. Plan for standard development. Monitoring the external situation. Outcome: Knowledge spread on final seminar and in final report, proposals for standardization.

Objective: Industrial collaboration around climate benefit. Case studies. Investigation of how standards can contribute.

Outcome: Project collaboration in the steel value chain. Case studies showing differences in three methods. Proposed standardization initiative. Expected results and effects:

Many actors within the steel value chain have participated and gained in-depth insights into the relationship between standards in the climate area and other initiatives focusing on the climate footprint of organizations and products and to accelerate the climate transition. The purposes and scopes and its effects for different actors on the market have been discussed.

The results will be published in a solid reference document. This is expected to increase involvement in standardization work and, by extension, more appropriate standards for steel with a very low climate footprint. Approach and implementation:

Following steps were included: Stakeholder analysis based on survey questions and interviews regarding use of standards and methods from various climate initiatives and what is missing for the climate work. Inventory of climate initiatives and standards important for the steel value chain. Review of where changes can be made in the steel value chain aiming to reduce steel´s climate impact.

GAP analysis where standards and initiatives were set against areas of improvement to see where further standardization may be needed. One workshop, two seminars. Conclusions and suggestions.
