Resource efficient bio based interlocking of CLT step2

Purpose and goal:

Project scope was to verify that CLT building elements can be provided with mechanical joints formed in the board, in order to replace screws, by confirming the positive indications achieved in project step 1. The goal was to make the technology ready for market rollout.

The project has confirmed that the technology meets market requirements. The finalised solution is resource-efficient, impact-resistant and forgiving of both common construction errors and CLT MC change between factory and construction site. Strength requirements are fulfilled and manufacturing is efficient.

Expected results and effects:

The project has produced manufacturing and construction documentation for the use of the technology. Soon after the end of the project probably confirmed time gains during sharp building installation.

As the technology is cheaper and better than today´s screw connections, offers benefits to several stakeholders in the value chain, and has few limitations in the application field and in modern manufacturing, it is considered likely that the technology will replace significant parts of today´s screw connections in CLT. The technology will be licensed to CLT manufacturers worldwide.

Approach and implementation: Full size (10x3x0.2 m) KLT floor slabs have been provided with joint geometry.

Effect of available machine tolerances in relation to joint geometry has been evaluated and joint design has been designed to accommodate the tolerances.

Full size test elements have been performance tested at LTH, then RISE has tested the strength of the joint under load ix results. Boards for sharp construction are manufactured.
