Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The project shows that the transition from fossil coal to biocoal is possible in the foundry industry. Using biochar as an alloying material in iron smelting is feasible both in gray iron and ductile iron.No negative effects on either mechanical properties or microstructure have been shown as an effect of the change from fossil coal to biochar. Further research is recommended to improve the implementation of biochar in industrial processes.

Replacing fossil carbon with biochar in bentonite-bound sand shows no significant changes in the sand´s rheology or mechanical properties. Expected results and effects: ** Denna text är maskinöversatt **

The successful implementation of this project shows that a transition from fossil coal to biochar is possible in iron foundries. By enabling iron foundries to use biochar, carbon dioxide emissions are significantly reduced and contribute to the global sustainability goals. By advancing our understanding of this sustainable alternative, we contribute to a greener and more resilient industrial environment.

Approach and implementation: ** Denna text är maskinöversatt **

The project has successfully demonstrated that biochar can replace fossil coal as alloying material on an industrial scale, without affecting the microstructure or mechanical properties of grey and ductile iron. This paves the way for a potential reduction in dependence on fossil fuels and a lower carbon footprint.

Furthermore, the project has identified areas that need further research to fully implement biochar in foundries; management practice and its limitations.
