Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The aim of the project is to include recycled aluminium-silicon (Al-Si) alloys in the production of aluminium-based metal matrix composites (Al-MMC) for brake disc application. The purposes of the project are: - the development and characterisation of an Al-MMC with the maximum suitable amount of recycled Al alloys

- The optimisation of the production process o through new methods to reduce the cycle time with cast-forging operations The final aim is to obtain an improved MMC brake disc, which is 50 % lighter than the traditional cast-iron equivalent. Expected results and effects:

The project aims to achieve a dual optimization of materials and production process that addresses the forming limits and the wear performance of the recycled Al-SiCp MMCs for high-temperature applications. Approach and implementation: The project is divided into six work packages, and the partners are actively involved in every work package.

WP1: Project management and outreach WP2: Literature review, to study the challenges of using recycled Al-Si alloys in practical application. WP3: Material optimization, to determine the influence of recycled alloys on the properties of the composite material. WP4: Process optimization, to get practical knowledge about the formability limits of MMCs with recycled alloys.

WP5: Validation of the wear performance of the MMC. WP6: Validation of the MMC component.
