Purpose and goal:
The purpose of the project is to develop circular guidelines for cellulose-based formable packaging as an aid in the choice of packaging solution where neither sustainability nor performance is a compromise. The goal is to define and demonstrate the applicability of the circular guidelines in two prototype concepts that are assessed on the basis of climate impact in comparison with existing packaging solutions through mechanical characterization and simulation of cellulose-based malleable packaging in combination with new bio-based functional chemistry.
Expected results and effects:
- Mapping of mechanical properties of cellulose fibers in 3D forming for optimized design, minimized material requirements and more complex packaging forms - Chemistry designed for 3D forming - with the ambition to achieve 100% bio-based functionalization
- Two competitive packaging concepts that ensure low climate impact and recyclable optimization without compromising product performance
- Design guidelines to help brands and packaging manufacturers to choose the most optimal solution from a circularity perspective Approach and implementation: The project is divided into six work packages, which will mainly run in parallel and involve all project partners. WP1: Circular design & impact assessment
WP2: Fiber raw material WP3: Functional packaging chemistry WP4: Packaging forming process WP5: Characterization & simulation of packaging material WP6: Project management & communication
