Purpose and goal:
The industrial adoption of All-Solid-State-Lithium-Batteries (ASSLBs) is hampered by cumbersome manufacturing routes currently attempted for fabrication of electrodes and the electrolyte. The GREEN-BAT project aims to utilize novel single-step manufacturing routes involving plasma spraying and laser directed energy deposition to replace multi-step processing of individual ASSLB constituents. Subsequently, sequential processing to consolidate components into a full cell will also be explored.
Expected results and effects:
The main anticipated outcome of GREEN-BAT will be demonstration of versatility of plasma spraying and laser directed energy deposition to develop ASSLB anode, cathode, and solid-electrolyte with requisite characteristics. Successful realization of the project will mature the above high-throughput direct multi-material processing technologies for sequential manufacturing of full ASSLB cells. The intent is to establish this novel approach as a platform for future production and development.
Approach and implementation:
The approach will involve systematic investigation of how process conditions influence microstructure, phase crystallinity and performance of individual ASSLB constituents, followed by half and full cells. Potential ASSLB end users such as automotive, marine, and aerospace industries are already familiar with both plasma spray and L-DED technologies. As existing equipment can be retrofitted and available know-how can be leveraged, the barrier for industrial adoption is expected to be low.
