Grant Description

We will construct a program theory depicting the development and testing of a peer support intervention with the purpose to promote psychosocial health and wellbeing among forced migrants at risk of experiencing psychosocial health-related consequences and disparities based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

Grounded in exploratory descriptive studies, the goal will be to tailor a peer support intervention according to the needs and preferences within the target population.

The planning stage leading to a program theory will focus on four main methodological considerations: (i) establishing pragmatic recruitment strategies; (ii) identifying relevant and appropriate psychosocial evaluation; (iii) determining appropriate study design for future intervention studies; and (iv) developing a support manual depicting intra-intervention techniques and components.

Through participatory action research, a program theory will be co-developed in close collaboration with the target population and clinical expertise.

A public contribution board will be formed, consisting of persons with lived experience of coming to Sweden with this background and clinical representatives.

Together with the researchers, the group will establish the program theory and develop the intervention through sequential workshops.

This intended research project will address a marginalized population in society at risk of significant psychosocial consequences and disadvantages following their arrival in the host country.

Adequate psychosocial support for forced migrants who arrive to Sweden after experiencing trauma and persecution based on their gender identity and sexual orientation is absolutely necessary in society.

It is possible that an intervention offering tailored peer support for the target population would not only improve their individual health and wellbeing, but could also result in an opportunity to address and improve the social disadvantages experienced within the target population.
