Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

In the novel power electronics devices, the magnetic components play a critical role in the power conversion process. Material selection is extremely important to achieve the best balance between performance and cost. The aim of the project is to develop new soft magnetic materials capable to provide higher efficiency and smaller size in power electronics.

Various approaches facilitated by powder metallurgy are utilized in aim to improve the electromagnetic performance of the new material towards the levels increasingly demanded in various applications. Expected results and effects:

A successful development of cost-efficient manufacturing processes and tailored microstructures for new soft magnetic materials will provide competitive advantages for the supplier of magnetic material in the rapidly growing sector of battery powered systems. The value chain partners benefit from the growing demand of their services. The end-users attain competitive advantages through ability to supply higher performing products providing smaller size and weight as well as higher energy efficiency. The need to generate electricity will be reduced.

Approach and implementation:

New powder alloys will be designed and manufactured with the newest available techniques into nanocomposite structures. Also, a novel concept of using nitrides in Fe-based materials will be elaborated. Iterative trials will be carried out and selective variants will be processed to net shape composite materials.

The properties and microstructure of the new materials will be studied. A prototype test will be made. Potential new applications and an implementation plan for the new materials will be elaborated.
