Purpose and goal:
Increase the usability of Swedish and imported scrap of selected classes so that a scrap shortage for Swedish plants can be avoided when blast furnaces is switched to electric arc furnace operation. Expected results and effects:
To improve the knowledge of contaminants in different types of scrap by combining functions for simulation, statistical analysis and process optimization. This knowledge enables increased flexibility and cost optimization regarding the mixture of old scrap, new scrap and direct reduced iron ore, so-called sponge iron or HBI, as raw materials in scrap-based production. This knowledge can also create increased transparency around
scrap collection, sorting and usage, as well as providing important knowledge on how these processes can be improved. Approach and implementation:
Stage 1 of the project focuses on knowledge of scrap quality and stage 2 on recipe changes that utilize the new knowledge. Coordinator and research performer is Kobolde & Partners AB who has developed the software used and who will develop it further during the project. Participating companies contribute data, smelting experiments to verify analysis results and full-scale experiments where new recipes are tested that make better use of the studied scrap classes.
The companies also intend to hold discussions with scrap suppliers about proposals for measures to improve scrap quality.
