Unescos Biosphere reserves (BRs) are role models and learning sites for combining biodiversity conservation and human development and have been exploring methods since the programme was launched in 1973.
BECOME will connect some of the most prominent nodes for BR research to repeat a global survey with over 100 BRs which was first conducted by the Swedish partner in 2008, and combine it with an analysis of big data on land-use change and biodiversity trends, to gain a more robust understanding of management effectiveness.
This has not been done before, and will help us go beyond self assessment of what works and not.
In addition to the global study, we will conduct case studies of biospheres (in Sweden, Portugal, SouthAfrica, Norway and France) where we collaborate with stakeholders to develop context-dependent but generalizable metrics which facilitate the adaptive co-management loop with participatory scenario planning.
We are particularly interested in exploring the potential of intergenerational pracice to develop meanings and measures of success, both present and future.
The results of the project can contribute to the implementation of loabla nd national policy frameworks for biodiversity conservation.
The research design will specifically account for priority areas of the new post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention of Biological Diversity.
