People with physical, mental or intellectual disabilities face significant obstacles in society.
These have negative impacts on their professional life, education, health, and social relationships, which create inequalities.
To gain better knowledge of when, how and why inequalities arise, it is necessary to observe and follow individuals with disabilities over time.
The purpose of this project is to link previously collected survey and register data to create unique longitudinal data at the individual level and conduct life course analyses of individuals with different types of disabilities. The data we will analyze are based on the Living Condition Surveys (ULF/SILC) and the Labor Force Surveys (LFS), which are two interview surveys conducted by SCB.
We will use ULF/SILC data from 1990 to 2018 (29 cohorts) and LFS data from 1996 to 2019 (14 cohorts).
To enable a life course analysis, the data are linked to register data on employment, income, education, and health (from Statistics Sweden, the Swedish Public Employment Service, the National Board of Health and Welfare, and the Swedish Medical Products Agency).
The data comprise approximately 70,000 people with disabilities, which will allow us to study a large number of outcomes by specific disabilities, gender, foreign background, and age.The results from the project can be expected to make a significant contribution to research in an area where there are large knowledge gaps, and to provide a basis for policy reforms.
