The aim of the project is to develop a publically available web-based air dispersion tool (SCAIL Sweden) to assess the nitrogen load, acid deposition and concentration levels of NH3, NOx and SO2 to sensitive habitats, and PM10 for human health, from combustion sources and large agricultural facilities in Sweden.
The tool will improve the assessment of environmental impacts in the permitting process, particularly for pig, poultry and cattle farms and combustion sources.
It is important to ensure that effective measures to reduce pollutant emissions are introduced (e.g. cooling of the manure and air purification filters) to mitigate environmental impacts and human health effects.
Subsequently, SCAIL will help the county administrative boards to exercise their regulatory responsibilities and improve operational efficiencies.
An additional advantage is that combustion operators and farmers will improve their knowledge of air pollutants, understand concepts like critical loads/levels and pollutant impacts. In this project, we will use an already existing web-based air dispersion model (SCAIL), consisting of two modules, SCAIL Agriculture and SCAIL Combustion, that has been developed for the UK and Ireland, and adapt it to Swedish conditions.
The model will be validated with measurements to provide an estimate of uncertainties in the tool.
The tool will be co-developed right from the start involving our stakeholder group including famers, planners and regulators.
