Enabling circular and bio-based packaging - a techno-economic approach

Purpose and goal:

The goal of this project is to develop comprehensive solutions for bio-based packaging through a technical-economic approach to enable circular packaging solutions along the value chain, which increases value-creating and resource-efficient use of bio-based materials and reduced use of raw materials with a large climate impact. The project aims for significant progress in Technology Readiness Level (TRL), Market Readiness Level (MRL) and Sustainability Readiness Level (SRL).

Expected results and effects:

The expected outcome of the project is to accelerate innovations in phasing out fossil-based packaging and enabling reusable fiber-based packaging. The project will also contribute directly to four of the UN´s 17 sustainable development goals. eg, Goal 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth; Goal 9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; Goal 11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable; and Goal 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production.

Approach and implementation:

The project ideas are: 1) to replace fossil-based packaging with bio-based alternatives for industrial and e-commerce applications; 2) to design and create reusable fiber-based packaging. Comprehensive circular bio-based solutions will be developed in collaboration with actors along the value chain. The project´s activities are organized in five work packages: WP1.

Development of circular business models; WP2. Material substitution; WP3. Development of reusable packaging; WP4. Development of reuse and recycling streams; WP5. Coordination and communication.
