Sustainable biobased building envelopes

Purpose and goal:

The project aims to accelerate a transition to bio-based insulation for exterior wall structures in industrially manufactured wooden houses. The main goal of this project is to reduce the Swedish construction sector´s climate impact with a focus on the building envelope. This is done by simplifying substitution from fossil-based materials to bio-based alternatives, through reduced risks and uncertainties for implementation by Swedish wooden house companies.

Another important objective is increased knowledge both in industry and academia, but also in society at large. Expected results and effects:

The result after the completion is that the project´s industrial wooden house factories have robust but cost-effective bio-based exterior walls on market within a few years. Results from the project will be shared in their entirety with participating companies, but general results are shared with the industry in general as well as scientific communities.

The effect is that the industrial group has a theoretical and practical knowledge of bio-based walls ready for implementation. Uncertainties will be reduced by investigating various factors, but primarily energy and durability. Approach and implementation:

The project is carried out in 3 workpackages: The purpose of WP1 is to map and compile experiences that exist regarding bio-based insulation, including a catalogue of reference projects and a list of locally available bio-based materials that are suitable for substitution. The purpose of WP2 is to create a basis for a quantitative risk assessment of various design solutions using probabilistic modelling risk assessment.

The purpose of WP3 is to create opportunities for rational decisions, support and risk spreading in innovation projects by developing a decision support.
