Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The objective of this project is to accelerate the substitution of complex multilayer plastic packaging with high performing fiber-based materials. This will be accomplished by developing high performing and fully recyclable fiber-based packaging solutions that ensure the same barrier properties and shelf life while limiting food and product waste. Generalized fiber-based packaging designs will be created for different categories of consumer products which are today packed in plastics, allowing brand owners to keep the promises set by their plastic strategies.

Expected results and effects:

The primary results of this project will be a reduction in the dependence of the fast-moving consumer goods packaging industry on virgin plastic packaging and its associated waste. Approach and implementation:

The project approach to substitution of plastic with paper packaging is to address and solve the four main challenges related to increasing the TRL, SRL and MRL the involved actors of the value chain face today: (1) Securing the barrier properties of the final paper-based packaging; (2) Securing the machineability of paper in existing packaging lines (form/fill/seal); (3) Securing the necessary performance, in terms of shelf-life and product health and safety Requirements; (4) Demonstrating the reduced environmental and techno-economic impact of the developed solutions.
