Purpose and goal:
The project intends to develop a textile fibre that is bio-based and biodegradable in sea and on land. The fibre is expected to be particularly useful in disposable nonwoven-textiles such as agricultural textiles, packaging, wet wipes, diapers, and face masks.
Our goal is to develop a melt spun fibre which is viable from a technical, commercial and environmentally sustainable point of view, which can replace today´s fossil-based polymer fibres used in many products. Expected results and effects:
Our newly developed material is intended to replace fossil-based polymer, especially polypropylene, in single-use textiles and thereby produce effects such as reduced net emissions of carbon dioxide and reduced occurrence of microplastics in nature. Approach and implementation:
The polymer material will be developed by Gaia Biomaterials in close collaboration with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden who will develop a suitable melt spinning process. The produced fibres will be formed into non-woven products by Tenowo GmbH, and the products will be evaluated in an acricultural application by BCC AB. The project is led by Skarp Engineering. Life cycle analyses of relevant materials and processes will be carried out by RISE.
