To reduce the climate impacts of transportation, municipalities are exploring numerous approaches. One is the use of mobility measures. By providing a range of mobility measures, developers can reduce the amount of parking they are required to build. Research has shown a strong connection between the availability of parking, car ownership and car use.
Thus, reducing parking in new development has the potential to contribute to more sustainable mobility practices.In Gothenburg, mobility measures are contractually set between the city and housing companies with mobility agreements.
This project is a collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology, the City of Gothenburg and IVL to evaluate these mobility agreements and their effects.
The study investigates mobility measures in different residential areas, property owners’ approaches to meeting residents’ mobility needs, the effects on resident mobility and accessibility.The aim of the project is to provide the City of Gothenburg actionable knowledge that they can use in the evaluation of mobility agreements and to inform broader policy approaches to parking reform and sustainable mobility.
The study contributes to knowledge about the combined impacts of flexible parking arrangements, reduced-parking development, and mobility measures.
The findings will be applicable to municipalities in Sweden and internationally using parking reform and mobility measures as tools for transport-efficient urban planning.
