Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The project developed and optimise the world´s first bio-based membrane for VRFBs, addressing limitations in traditional membranes. We carefully analyzed bio-based materials to identify ideal components. Through rigorous testing, we achieved a breakthrough in material design, resulting in an exceptional, efficient membrane.

This milestone advances sustainable energy storage, attracting industry interest. Energy companies, research institutions, and policymakers recognize the transformative potential of bio-based membranes for a greener future. Expected results and effects:

The project aimed to optimize Cellfion´s VRFB membrane, reducing crossover of undesired molecules. Through analysis and experimentation, we achieved a deep understanding of the membrane´s properties and fine-tuned its performance. The result is an efficient membrane that significantly minimizes crossover.

With this project´s success, Cellfion now possesses a compelling Proof of Concept (PoC) that resonates in the market. This milestone validates our innovative approach and showcases the potential of our technology. Approach and implementation:

During the course of the project, we undertook several work packages, each of which played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) and optimizing their performance. These work packages included the characterization of membranes and the investigation of VRFB device operation. They provided us with a foundation for further development efforts that will be targeted at industry environments, enabling us to refine our technology and move closer to commercialization.
