VEGGY COAT aimed to develop economically feasible edible bio-based protection for fruits and vegetables, which effectively extends shelf life by 2-3 times. Depending on the type of supply chain conditions and type of product, the shelf life is extended from 3-4 days up to 2 weeks. Expected results and effects:

We successfully developed the protective product and two patent applications were created. The preliminary evaluations show that the new coating has 85% less carbon footprint and is considered food grade. Approach and implementation:

We managed to develop the state-of-the-art protection that matches plastics performance and complies with European food safety regulations. Various work packages were conducted successfully and the results were validated in the supply chain of the retail chains. The outcome of the project is going to be taken to the next step until it is commercialized in the market. Timely financial support of Vinnova had a major role in success of the project.
