Maintenance of Battery Production (MATTER)

Purpose and goal:

The project aimed to develop maintenance-related circularity principles in battery factories and achieved all its specific goals: (1) uncovering the characteristics of battery production, (2) identifying key enabling responses for the maintenance function (3) proposal for a large-scale research project, and (4) developing pedagogical material. The project thereby created a foundation for future research on maintenance of battery production.

Expected results and effects:

The MATTER project achieved four main results: uncovering the sources of complexity in battery production, identifying key enabling responses for the maintenance function, developing a full-scale project proposal, and creating pedagogical material. Two scientific publications were achieved (one conference, one journal). This led to effects such as increased awareness of circularity principles in maintenance of battery production, an agenda for future research, new industry networking, and upskilling readiness for maintenance workers.

Approach and implementation:

The project was executed through four work packages (WP) focusing on research, consortium building, and dissemination. Literature reviews and site visits were conducted to uncover the sources of complexity and identify key enabling responses for maintenance in battery factories. Consortium workshops were executed to formalize the large-scale project applications. The results were synthesized into research publications and pedagogical materials for education and dissemination.
