Purpose and goal:
The goal of the project is to prove that circuit boards produced with bio-based benzoxazine material can have a comparable dielectric loss factor than FR4 material-based circuit boards. We: Successfully synthetized monomers Tested different production methods to be able to produce laminates from the developed resins
Designed a dedicated test pattern that can provide information relative to the performances of the material in terms of permittivity and loss tangent Perform the tests on the bio-based and a FR4 circuit boards and compare the results Expected results and effects:
During the project we successfully performed all these challenges. The biggest challenge was to be able to successfully produce a resin and a bio-based circuit board that could survive the high temperatures and be used for testing. Due to the limited amount of resin produced we tested the manufacturing process on a commercial benzoxazine. We concluded that the initial hypothesis has been proven positive and that this type of material could become a valid competitor to standard FR4 material.
Approach and implementation:
The project started with a detailed planning of the work and definition of responsibilities. With the successful manufacturing of sample PCB material, we could print the design of the test circuit on the bio-based material and perform tests on the received samples and the standard FR4 circuit board. Together we could analyze the results of the tests. Overall, the parties have collaborated in a very positive and productive way supporting each other in all the steps of the project.
