Purpose and goal:
The purpose was to test the hypothesis that an aqueous barrier formulation comprised of starch matrix and graphene additives can be implemented in coating machines on semi-pilot scale and coated on paper for packaging applications. To test this experimentally, we developed barrier formulations using industrially relevant methods to achieve the desired scale and material properties. The barrier formulations were compatible with the coating machine, and therefore the hypothesis was confirmed.
Expected results and effects:
We have gained a better understanding of material and formulation development towards semi-pilot scaled coating applications. At RISE, we have demonstrated an industrially relevant method for multi-liter scale dispersion barrier formulations. A selection of barrier formulations was successfully coated on paper in one of the coating machines at Billerud´s facility.
The barrier performance of free-standing films was also evaluated with promising results. The results motivate further development in a future project. Approach and implementation:
The scope and specifications of the project were identified and revised during monthly meetings between RISE and Billerud. RISE performed the material and barrier formulation development, which involved a systematic study of industrially relevant materials (starch, graphene, plasticizer) and their properties, as well as the design of a scalable method. The barrier formulations were delivered to Billerud, who performed the coating trials on paper and evaluated the industrial viability.
