The aim of the study was to investigate whether lignin can replace phenol formaldehyde resin in high pressure and low pressure laminates. A high-pressure laminate has been produced with roughly 50% lignin derivatives with similar properties to a laminate from phenolic resin impregnated papers. Expected results and effects:

The laminates impregnated with roughly 50% lignin derivatives have a similar microstructure to those with phenolic resin. The resin appears to be well distributed in the cross-section, but the laminate has slightly larger pores in the plane, which may be due to slightly higher pressure. Bubbles associated with climatic cycling indicate non-optimized parameters.

Lignin, lignin derivatives and other components were used to impregnate kraft paper for HPL and LPL products. Fractionation of lignin and the influence of molecular weight on impregnation results were studied. Laminates with PF were prepared as a reference.
The microstructure of the laminates was investigated in a scanning electron microscope. The cross-sections were cut with a UV excimer laser. The samples were studied without gold coating. In addition, the laminates were exposed to the cyclic climatic effects of moisture and freezing.
