Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The purpose of the project has been to identify the research needs associated with casting and welding of large but thin components manufactured in MAR-M247. The goal for the project was to generate results that justify a research project whose aim will be to develop and expand the use of MAR-M247 for the manufacture of lightweight components and thereby improve the performance of turbines.

The project has fulfilled this need in a broader concept linked to casting and welding of superalloys i.e. MAR-M247, IN718, H282, 718Plus and Waspaloy. Expected results and effects:

Results of the projects have highlighted the challenges with MAR-M247 and its variants linked to casting, welding and repair. These research questions will form the basis of a larger project in superalloys with links to e.g. thin-walled applications within, primarily, the Aerospace industry.

An external workshop has been conducted with a total of 12 participating organisations. The purpose of this workshop was to discuss challenges in superalloys and find future collaborations and basis for consortium for forthcoming R&D-projects. Approach and implementation:

Project has been a pre-study, which is why the focus has been on simulation of above all the MAR-M247 alloy for welding and casting. Work has been organised in five work packages, casting simulation, welding simulation, validation and verification, alternative methods together with project management.

In the work package alternative methods practical work has also been carried out with DED printing (Directed Energy Deposition an additive manufacturing process) of alloys H282 and M247 on cast M247.
