Purpose and goal:
The project´s objective was to (i) investigate the potential for floating wind power with Hagnesia´s lightweight generator solution and to (ii) plan for a larger R&D project to raise the technical readiness level of such a solution. Thanks to simulation and design studies at the turbine level, it was confirmed that the generator solution has a disruptive potential for direct and indirect material savings, while at the same time improving the efficiency (and thus electricity production) of the wind turbine. Based on this, several promising FOI project have been proposed.
Expected results and effects:
The preliminary but very promising results from completed simulation and design studies have already had a positive effect in attracting interest for continued R&D projects. Several strategically important research partners and projects have been formulated, and funding for at least one large R&D project has been secured. The expected effect of this is a higher TRL level and important research progress within the coming years.
Approach and implementation:
Simulation studies were done for conventional wind turbines on semi-submersible floating platform (using the IEA´s 15 MW reference turbine) and for a vertical-axis floating wind turbine. By replacing the conventional drivetrain with Hagnesia´s generator, the wind turbine´s efficiency (electricity production) as well as direct and indirect material savings at turbine level were investigated.
The results were used to plan and motivate further FOI project to validate, broaden and deepen the studies in larger international research collaborations.
