Dressed not to kill: a podcast on fashion and sustainability

Eight percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the clothing and shoe industries.

Scholars have demonstrated the environmental impact of the fashion industries for years and developed new ways of producing textiles and clothing within planetary boundaries, of addressing responsibility in supply chains, etc. Still, the transformation towards sustainability is too slow. The global consumption of clothing is expected to increase by 63% from 2015 to 2030.

One problem is that many studies and change measures disregard the fact that fashion is a cultural economy: a field where sensemaking and creative expression is highly valued, where people use fashion to place themselves in time and space and to communicate their identities to others, where creatives defend their autonomy and strive to make their creative marks, and where tastemakers determine what fashion is considered good and bad, respectively – without taking any material responsibility.

The aim of the project is to create an engaging and inspiring podcast which discusses the sustainability challenges of the fashion industry from a cultural economy perspective and with a wide range of researchers and practitioners, in order to foster a more sustainable fashion field. Target group is all the actors of the fashion field: fashion consumers, fashion producers and tastemakers.

A pod is an accessible medium and allows for a diverse set of voices and interviews in different places.
