Purpose and goal:

The aim of OXELHY is to demonstrate the benefits of using electric and hydrogen combustion heating during reheating of steel compared to fossil fuel combustion heating to promote the use of alternative heating methods to reduce the CO2 emissions. This by investigate the formation of oxide scales using environments produced during the hydrogen combustion heating, but also by testing the versatility of electric heating for well-controlled atmospheres.

Expected results and effects:

The steel industry is facing the challenge of finding alternative heating methods to the fossil fuel combustion. The methods must cover the need to reduce CO2 emissions while being able to fulfil the demand of steel manufacturing processes. The implementation and improvement of alternative heating methods face some challenges that will be addressed in this project.

The knowledge obtained from these challenges can be transferable to most of the other stages of the value chain to demonstrate the potential of electric heating and hydrogen combustion. Approach and implementation:

OXELHY aims to promote the use and benefits of alternative heating methods such as electric heating and hydrogen combustion in the reheating process of steel. For the conversion to alternative heating technologies and reduce CO2 emissions, it is vital to fully understand the implications on heat treated products and processes. Therefore, the project is structured into 7 work-packages that includes simulation, laboratory-, pilot- and full-scale trials.
