The main goal of ESiWACE3 is to advance the extremely high-resolution, yet specific and experimental, weather and climate models developed in ESiWACE1+2, and develop more generally applicable variants on EuroHPC supercomputers.
This supports the transition to exascale computing and increases knowledge transfer between research centres across Europe.
Development requires establishing and transferring knowledge for efficient and scalable simulations, closing technical knowledge gaps and creating a hub for education, communication and dissemination of high-resolution simulations in European weather and climate modelling SMHI plays a significant role in the venture by being the lead developer of EC-Earth which is one of three flagship codes for ESiWACE3.
SMHI will contribute expertise in climate research, model development and communication: A virtualised version of EC-Earth and its work flow tools will be developed, enabling easy and efficient use of EuroHPC systems.
This development is complemented by specific technical support for EC-Earth users, thereby expanding HPC services for climate scientists and filling a support gap preventing the use of future exascale systems. Documentation and training materials for EC-Earth shall be developed and provided to facilitate knowledge transfer.
SMHI will also lead the development of an engagement strategy towards a more inclusive and diverse research community in weather and climate modelling.
