Purpose and goal:
The project aimed to better understand the requirements placed on a control system that can control a quantum processor (QPU) with many quantum bits (e.g. >100). Specifically, we wanted to start from our existing control device Presto, which is well tested on small quantum systems, and see what adjustments and what additional technology would be needed to control a large quantum system.
We identified and implemented two improvements: a modular analog input that can be adapted to different QPUs and high-precision time synchronization between multiple Presto boxes. Expected results and effects:
We have developed technical solutions that in one case directly improved our existing product Presto by making it easier to adapt it for different QPU architectures. In terms of time synchronization, the technical solution has led to a new product, Metronomo, which we have already soft-launched and which is now in production. With these new products and features, we are well equipped to offer control systems for a QPU with 100s of quantum bits.
Approach and implementation:
The project was carried out partly through broad knowledge acquisition by reading scientific literature, participating in scientific conferences and communicating with researchers, our users, potential customers and partners. The remaining part of the project was technical development of electronics which involved studying data sheets, making simulations, schematics and PCB designs and finally manufacturing and testing these with respect to their microwave properties.
