Purpose and goal:
The goal for this project is to demonstrate reliable substation automation over wireless 5G networks and the feasibility of 5G edge computing hardware as an open and vendor independent execution platform. Both centralised and distributed automation architectures can be envisioned in this scenario, and a vendor independent approach can be explored. This project will demonstrate Vendor Independent
Substation Automation over 5G (VISA/5G) in two scenarios: the LTU 5G testbed and edge computing cluster, and a real Vattenfall substation. Expected results and effects:
The project will develop new knowledge and foster advanced digitalisation that will contribute to renewal of Swedish power industry with innovative solutions. It will contribute to increase Sweden’s attraction as a research and innovation hub for 5G technologies and contribute to increase the telecom sector’s knowhow on how to apply their technology within the power sector.
Approach and implementation:
The project aims at enabling true software-centric engineering of substation automation which is based on an open vendor-independent architecture and allows for executing software solutions on networked heterogeneous hardware. This approach promises substantial reduction of development and maintenance costs for energy automation systems during their lifetime.
The project will innovate by working closely with Vattenfall and their needs involving the main global stakeholders from the telecommunications and energy sectors.
