Climate polices for transformative changes in new sustainable supply chains From ore to vehicles

Purpose and goal:

The project aims to investigate which new policy instruments and changes to existing policy instruments that can contribute to accelerate the climate transition of the supply chain from extraction of iron ore to production of vehicles. This value chain accounts for a significant share of Sweden´s emissions of GHG and constitutes an important part of the Swedish export industry.

The supply chain includes the production of materials and energy carriers, component manufacturing and vehicle production. The aim is to propose adjustments of existing policies and complementary policies. Expected results and effects:

A focus on the entire value chain will make it possible to identify barriers to the climate transition as well as opportunities for improvements in the governing systems. Policy instruments to be analyzed include the EU emissions trading scheme, climate tariffs, innovation support, permit processes, reduction obligations and (potential) electricity price compensation.

The project´s results will form an important basis for the introduction and reform of climate policy instruments in Sweden and in the EU, with the objective to accelerate the transition to fossil-free value chains. Approach and implementation:

The project will be operated as a collaborative project between researchers, businesses, municipalities and authorities, and will form a platform for dialogue. The researchers in the project all have ongoing projects that will contribute with insights about what may be needed to obtain fossil free value chains.
