Small steps towards a big change

The project aimed at a small but broad institutional shift towards a supportive policy landscape for industrial and urban symbiosis (IUS), through common problem understand and joint action in cooperation between acadmia and national agencies. Project objectives of breadth and depth has been reached. Around 60 pesons from national authorities, 160 from local/regional authorities and 20 business representatives have been involved through seminars, workshops, in-depth dialogues or working meetings, three knowledge bases have been produced.

Knowledge of IUS has been spread to new actors. Actors working with IUS have been connected in new contact networks within, between and outside agencys. Through new knowledge and dialogue meetings, nuanced knowledge has been reached.

At least 3 policy processes have been affected directly (e.g. development of research support programs) and a number indirectly (e.g. municipalities´ work with mass management). Participants have gained increased capacity to identify IUS perspectives themselves in policy processes and assignments. Approach and implementation:

The project desing, with project logic and goals of taking small steps in policy processes, rather than pre-planned activities, participants and results, enabled openness for acitities that participants found valuable. Hence participants were committed to take own initiative as part of the project, which has been decisive for goal fulfiment. It also provided the flexibility that made it possible to handle that for some identified problems and processes cound not be adressed for example due to a lack of resources from the public authority.
