Purpose and goal:
The objective of LIGNOMIN is to provide a holistic concept for a low-carbon-footprint mining industry by using renewable feedstocks for production of novel biobased froth flotation reagents that can offer higher revenue by an increased recovery of valuable base metals. More specific, LIGNOMIN, will explore the impact of using lignin from abundant lignocellulosic sources, i.e. technical lignins from Nordic biorefineries, as well as residues from the agricultural and food industry, for production of lignin particles to be used in a new flotation reagent system.
Expected results and effects:
Demonstrated industrial feasibility of the novel lignin reagent-based solution, based on partial or total replacement of fossil-based xanthate collectors with biobased, biodegradable, and nontoxic alternatives.
Demonstrated impact of LIGNOMIN as a strategy to increase metal recovery and at the same time reduce the environmental impact of the mining sector and enhance its potential to mitigate climate change. New technology and business models that can promote an industrial use of the LIGNOMIN concept. Approach and implementation:
The project is carried out for 36 months and is led by Ulrika Rova from Luleå University of Technology. The project includes partners with competence throughout the value chain; Luleå University of Technology, Boliden Mineral AB, Bottenvikens Bryggeri AB and ONar AB.
