Children today, live in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
They are the first generation whose education, health care and spare time increasingly are mediated by AI-powered applications.
This raises questions of how to prepare them with skills and knowledge about AI and its effects, competencies also referred to as AI-literacy.The overall aim of this project is to co-design a research-based theoretical foundation for AI-literacy in Social science and STEM classrooms in Swedish Primary education.
The goal is to share evidence and good practice on equipping teachers with appropriate content, pedagogy technology and ethics necessary for teaching AI-literacy.
Primary school is in focus as the use of AI starts booming in 9-13-year-old-students´ lives. The 4-year-research is designed as commencing with a literature review providing a framework for a subsequent Delphi study, utilized for co-designing authentic AI-literacy modules and didactic designs for primary education.
In turn, an empirical intervention in two primary schools with the modules will be documented by video-observations and evaluated by interviews with teachers and students. As the importance of AI literacy is being recognized in many countries, it is crucial that research in Sweden can contribute to this field.
The project is carried out by an interdisciplinary research team in both AI and Education and a Swedish Edtech company and the Dep. of Education in a Swedish municipality as collaborating partners.
