The way forward - Challenges and benefits of IoT healthcare devices for children

Purpose and goal:

The main aim of the project is to create more equal and accessible care for children and young people with chronic diseases, based on the family´s needs and situation. The goal of the project is to A) increase the understanding of how a chronic disease progresses based on both hospital and self-generated health data, B) contribute to more equal care, C) reduce workloads through the automation of complex care flows within the health care system and D) make available objective measurement methods for activity and inactivity in children and young people.

Expected results and effects:

The expectations is that the project will contribute to A) increased understanding how we can combine self- and hospital-generated health data with the aim of monitoring and predicting the progress of a chronic disease, B) a more equal care for children with chronic diseases, C) healthcare staff being able to devote more time to the patients and less time to administrative work and D) the healthcare system objectively being able to measure activity and inactivity in children and young people.

Approach and implementation:

The project will be carried out during 2023 and 2024 in a clinical environment using both study and project formats at the children´s hospitals in Gothenburg, Lund and Uppsala. Several IoT-solutions are already implemented at the children´s hospitals and there is close cooperation between the health care units and the companies that assist with the various IoT solutions. The work is led by the Gothenburg Children´s Hospital.
