Purpose and goal:
In this project we aim to increase the performance of natural fibers and protect them from the environment by coating them with graphene. A complete study from the microscale to the macroscale level will be done with material selection, manufacturing including chemical and graphene treatments, testing and material characterization (from micro and macro scales).
Expected results and effects:
Successful execution of the project will enable creation of the novel graphene-based products, which potentially support several Swedish companies in growing their business. This is especially true for the companies’ part of the application but may also impact other Swedish companies that use these solutions and services. For example, a Swedish company wanting to switch material to a more sustainable fiber-based composite, may use the support and results of the project, to increase their competitiveness in a market where sustainability is becoming a selling point.
Approach and implementation:
During the project a close connection between a material supplier, a graphene producer and an end user will ensure that the proper step towards industrial implementation is made. This project has the potential to impact on a wide array of the agenda 2030 targets, mainly as it promotes the increased use of natural fibers in application where they previously have not met the requirements.
One example is in the marine application, where the moisture absorption of natural fibers makes them unsuitable.
