Purpose and goal:
The project aims to develop and demonstrate an affordable, safe, and easy-to-use energy storage solution for all residential applications, including apartments without roofs, for balconies, house walls, etc. The ZincMate device can be used independently or paired with renewable energy generation. The technical basis for ZincMate is EET´s on-grid technology in combination with Enerpoly´s cost-effective aqueous batteries.
The developed device will be tested in both laboratory and home environments in this project, and results will be compiled in a techno-economic study. Expected results and effects:
In the EU, 75% of the population lives in urban areas (46% in apartments), and homes/buildings account for 40% of energy consumed. Renewable energy generation, storage and access in all buildings is crucial to achieve an energy-secure Europe. ZincMate´s affordability, safety and user-friendliness can improve energy storage adoption for all homes and buildings, improving energy savings and clean energy access.
In this project, we create successful working prototypes. After the project, we will industrialize and market ZincMate, and build revenue through ZincMate sales. Approach and implementation:
Enerpoly focuses on developing novel zinc-ion battery cells, packs, and battery management systems (BMS) optimized to the ZincMate device. EET’s efforts are concentrated on designing new power electronics to replace inverter functionality, allow bidirectional connection to grid and improve compatibility with photovoltaic systems. The battery and power electronics units will be integrated into the ZincMate device.
Prototypes will be tested in laboratory setting by EET and Enerpoly, and in field on testing sites across Europe. A techno-economic study will be conducted.
