Healthcare is one of the most promising application areas for artificial intelligence (AI) but research has identified numerous barriers to the implementation and use of AI applications and systems in the healthcare sector.
One such barrier is the knowledge monopoly of the health professions in matters regarding health and treatment of diseases, gained through long academic education, training, and practical experience. This project is based on three AI applications implemented and put into use during 2023-2024 in Region Halland, Sweden.
The overall aim is to generate new knowledge about real-world implementation and use of AI applications in routine healthcare and how professional roles can act as barriers during the implementation process.
The results from the project will provide new knowledge to a field which so far has mainly focused on the development of technological aspects of AI applications.
It will both advance the understanding of how to establish implementation processes for the introduction of AI applications in healthcare and inform how such processes can build on the competencies and roles of healthcare professionals.
