Computational Social Science (CSS) is an emerging research field that uses the tools of the computational and digital revolutions to study human social behavior.
Combining digital data sources with new machine learning methods and natural language processing opens up new possibilities for answering fundamental questions in the social sciences and humanities.
Researchers now possess the methodological tools, computational power, and rich information about individual behavior needed to perform detailed analyses of how large numbers of interacting individuals bring about social outcomes. The Swedish Center for Computational Social Science (SweCSS) aims to place Sweden at the international research front of CSS and to be a central node for CSS-oriented research groups and institutes worldwide.
We combine rich data, methodological advances, and clearly articulated social science theories to improve our understanding of society.
SweCSS rests on three pillars: (1) visiting professors with excellent records in CSS; (2) early-career researcher groups with internationally recruited junior CSS scholars; and (3) a doctoral program in CSS, providing high-quality methodological and theoretical training.
We place particular emphasis on recruiting selected top researchers with complementary expertise in social science and computer science to create new research constellations with the potential to produce truly excellent research in CSS.
