The purpose and goals of the project The project aims to create an understanding of how Swedish municipalities can use digital twins and how they can transform the large amount of IoT sensor data found in our communities into knowledge needed to make the decisions required to reach the Agenda 2030 goals in a larger scale.
Our goal is to implement a large-scale digital twin in the area of Kista in Stockholm that can show the entire flow from IoT sensor data to knowledge and decision-making, to develop a vision with an associated roadmap for municipalities regarding digital twins, and to drive municipal development forward.
Description Cities are extremely complex systems and the amount of information needed to make informed sustainable decisions is almost infinite.
In order for us to reach the sustainability goals, the municipalities need to develop their skills in managing, visualizing and communicating about the city´s various systems and services. IoT plays an absolutely decisive role here, but simply collecting sensor data for an IoT platform is not enough.
To make full use of digitization, sensor data must be translated into stories, knowledge and understanding.
We must also learn to integrate the new knowledge into the meetings and processes where we design the future city and to make the necessary decisions required to achieve a sustainable society. This is where digital twins can help.
By combining different types of data into a whole, we create an intuitive tool where everything can be understood in a context, where we can move between different scenarios, back and forth in time and in and out at different scales such as the building, block or district . However, Swedish municipalities´ road to useful digital twins is long.
In this project, we want to apply previous solutions developed within the various participating organizations and create a digital twin over the Kista district in Stockholm with the aim of: Show a working generic solution (ie that can be used regardless of the area of need) where we go from sensor and semantic data, to key figures and simulations, to stories.
Understand how municipalities must change their way of working around other data types so that they can be combined with IoT data.
With the built twin, make a needs inventory and understand how you could use the twin in the various organizations and produce a roadmap for what you need to be able to do that. The project´s results will show what the path to a digital twin with IoT data for Stockholm and other municipalities looks like so that decision-makers can take the next step towards the right tools needed to shape sustainable societies.
