5G as enabler for Cybersecure Connected Vehicles 5GCCV

Purpose and goal:

This project explores the challenges in cybersecurity affecting a vehicle in a transport and logistics scenario with border crossing and combination of private and public 5G networks, when a vehicle between different cellular networks, e.g., from a public cellular network to a private one in a mine and back again. Risks and mitigations within networks, application services and information flows need to be further assessed and evaluated, and implications to the resulting vehicle security and traffic safety established.

Expected results and effects:

The project will generate increased knowledge and understanding of the cybersecurity related challenges in taking automated vehicles to open roads. Among the topics for investigation are - Structured communication between organisations regarding cybersecurity incidents - Live attack tests with different critical connected devices

- Perspectives on cybersecurity in connected vehicles - Sensors and cybersecurity - Specific attack scenarios such as rogue connectivity points and loss of connectivity Approach and implementation:

The project will take on the challenge of vehicles on the open road, by emulating attacks on cars, using the AstaZero test track area as the playground for the exercises. During 2024, the project will extend that infrastructure to a public 5G transport corridor at public roads, setting up a 5G corridor between the AstaZero test track and highway 40 (riksväg 40). The 5G corridor, operated by Telia, will be a part of the already approved Connecting Europe Facility CEF2 funding.
