Opportunities have been emerging in wireless networks with integrating radio sensing in mobile communications systems to support new applications and satisfy human needs in a sustainable way.
Collaborative robots, with their advanced sensors and signal processing capabilities, have recently appeared as new frontiers to verify and realize joint sensing and communication (JSAC) feasibilities. Limited recent studies have made progress on radio channel modeling and JSAC algorithm design with proper assumptions.
However, JSAC systems face their fundamental challenges in channel modeling and quantized gain of the performance has not been well studied. Also, very few JSAC hardware implementations have been done in the research area.
This project brings together the strength of fundamental analysis of both Chalmers and New York University (NYU), and the hardware capabilities of NYU Wireless center, aiming at revealing the benefit and feasibility of JSAC systems.
Focusing on a communication-aware robot navigation system, channel modeling, algorithm design, and hardware implementations will be carried out in three well-designed work packages for 24 months.
Using various channel modeling/prediction schemes and radio resource allocation algorithms, the system will be evaluated and verified in both theoretical analysis and experimental validations.
It is expected that the results from this project could have a great impact on the research field and trigger more collaborations.
