Techno-economic feasibility study for energy efficient buildings enabled by indoor 5G wireless systems

Purpose and goal:

The FoI project 5GSB has had as objective to provide the real estate industry with support for the establishment of services based on indoor 5G networks. The goal has been met. In addition to investigation results, the interest organization Fastighetsägarna has recently (April 2024) published and recommended the model that the project has studied as the way forward for their industry members. The results are promising and the project is now looking for a format for the next step.

Expected results and effects:

The solution for indoor 5G services based on so-called "neutral host" has been further elaborated and found to be a way forward for the larger real estate owners. This is true especially for Industry and Office buildings. It is expected that further testing and evaluation will take place during 2024/2025 and that commercial roll-out on a larger scale will take place after that.

Approach and implementation:

5GSB is a 13-month project carried out with partners from the real estate industry (Akademiska Hus), end users and research houses (KTH and RISE) as well as indoor network operator for 4G/5G (Proptivity). Both technical and business aspects have been included. The working assumption now is that the results will be used to proceed in an expanded constellation with several partners in addition to the original ones.
