Purpose and goal: Sanitation360s overall aim is to provide processes and products to be able to convert urine into fertilizer.
The goal of the phase 2 project is to have a locally produced, field proven, low-cost urine concentrator ready for manufacturing and distribution for the Global South. Expected results and effects:
We want to provide products and processes for the global south that convert urine with 0.5% nitrogen into a dry fertilizer that can be used for cultivation with as much as 15% nitrogen. A family can produce 100 kg of dry fertilizer instead of 2000 kg of liquid waste/year. This solves two important environmental issues.
1. The majority of the sewage´s plant nutrients are collected and can be handled. Negative effects on health, soil pollution and sewage management can be reduced. 2. The drying next to the toilet solves the problem with the need to build new, or rebuild, piping systems. Approach and implementation:
We have a number of partners that we work with in South Africa: 1&2) Purchase of materials locally and build prototypes on site 3) Filed tests of both prototypes and processes 4) Adjustments of prototypes and processes based on feedback
5) Tests in the field of both prototypes and processes with demonstrations of how it works in the field to ensure that we reach functional requirements, customer specifications, production cost and that it fits into partners´ processes and fits the infrastructure. 6) Spread the results to the following regions.
